Vertical stratification of trees and plants is a
characteristic feature of rain forests. The upper canopy consists of trees reaching heights of 100 to 165 ft. This canopy is open with large spaces between treetops through which sunlight can pass. The upper canopy is permanently occupied by animals who never leave the upper canopy. The next lowest layer consists of a more enclosed canopy of trees entangled with lianas and strangler figs which eventually kill the host tree that they wrap around.Below the middle canopy, at the forest floor level, there are very few plants because the upper canopies are so dense that they do not allow sunlight to pass through. |
Orchids are perennial flowering plants found most
abundantly in tropical areas. They have diverse flower forms that are used to attract specific insects. |
